Legacies First Annual Award Ceremony Hosted by FIT on April 17th 2010 honored Arthur McGee with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was presented to Arthur McGee by US State Representative Carl McCall. The Legacies Award was presented by Actress Cicely Tyson. McGee was honored by FIT as fashion designer who contributed to the fashion industry over four decades. A pioneer in the fashion industry since the 50s, McGee was the first designer of African ancestry to head a major fashion house on Seventh Ave. Under his own label, he sold to major department stores like Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Ave and Bergdorf Goodman. McGee was a dedicated mentor and inspiration to hundreds of young designers and students both nationally and internationally. He is significantly noted for his innovative designs. McGee used traditional men’s wear fabrics for women’s wear and merged African textiles with the African-American aesthetic creating something unique and revolutionary.
